Features of the Department

     ♦ Our department is one of the oldest department in our college. It was established in the year 1966-67 with the strength of 24 students. An additional strength of 16 was sanctioned from the acadamic year 1967-68 and the total sanctioned strength is 40. We have submitted a proposal to Madurai Kamaraj University to start M.Sc Zoology in self stream. The PG course will be started during the next acadamic year(2015-2016).

Department Activities:

     ♦ On 01.02.12 - Organized State Level Seminar on “Recent Scenario in Biological Innovations”.

     ♦ On 22.01.15 - Organized a workshop on “Beekeeping”.

Staff Achievement

     ♦ Mrs. M.Tamilselvi, Associate Professor has completed two UGC sponsored Minor Reseach Projects entitled "Analaysing the food value of Ascidians(2007-2009)" and “Feed Formulation from Exotic Ascidians Didemnum psammathodes and Herdmania pallida(2011-2013).

     ♦ Mrs.R.Radhalakshmi Assistant Professor has submitted the UGC minor research project "Role of Ascidians in accumulating metals from marine environment - An analysis".

     ♦ Mrs.P.Veeramuthumani Assistant Professor has an ongoing UGC minor project "An assessment of trace elements metals & thyroid hormones fron Tunicates in Tuticorin coastal area".

     ♦ Our Staff Members have published their articles in Inter-National and National Level Journals and contributed chapters in the book and published two books.

     ♦ Two faculty members are pursuing Ph.D and a staff submitted her thesis.

     ♦ Motivates and traines the students to present the articles in the Conference / seminar at various levels.

Our Curriculum is designed

     ♦ To realize the value of animals and to conserve nature.

     ♦ To learn the recent biological techniques and the multidisciplinary applications of the subject.

     ♦ To provide self-employment opportunities with no larger investments.

Extension Activities of Our Department

     ♦ To conduct Blood group identification Camps in nearby villages.

     ♦ To handle classes to the students of nearby Govt. Hr.Sec Schools.

     ♦ To arrange Science Exhibition in our lab.

     ♦ To Conduct various competitions in connection with Wild Life Week Celebrations.

     ♦ To Conduct Shell Mela.

Field Trips

     ♦ Visited to Kadanchanaendal , CMFRI at Tuticorin and Mandapam , Rameshwaram , Chennai , Thenmalai , Kanyakumari etc.

Placement Oriented training

      One day workshop on "Bee Keeping" and "Shell toy Making" is arranged regularly.

Future Plan

      To create Awareness among school students, the following programmes to be conducted.

      a. Awareness Programmes on

             * Environmental Conservation And Health.

      b. Job Oriented Programmes

      c. Conducting Workshops on Apiculture , Pisciculture & Vermiculture.

Setting up Apiary

     To put up the apiary units in nearby villages.
